About The Test

About the Security Competency Test

The Security Competency Test is a written test based on what you learned in the Certificate II in Security Operations.
You should revise your course material before you sit the test.

The test is done under controlled conditions and checks whether you have the knowledge and communication skills needed
to enter the security industry. This includes understanding course content, writing incident reports, and communicating clearly.

Test structure

  • The test uses written responses only.
  • There are 10 short answer questions based on what you learned in the Certificate II in Security Operations. Each question is worth two marks (total = 20 marks).
  • This is followed by a workplace scenario, which you will read and answer four (4) related questions, which may include completing part of an incident report. Total = 20 marks.
  • This format is designed to check that you can apply your knowledge, use good judgement, and communicate clearly in ways that are required for security work.

Pass marks and cost

  • The full test is marked out of 40. To pass, you must score at least 30 marks out of 40 (75%).
  • You have 45 minutes to complete the test. If you do not finish in time, the questions you manage to complete will still be marked, and your result will be on those answers.
  • Results are usually emailed to you the day after the test. You will be told whether you passed or were unsuccessful. If you do not pass, you will need to book another test. WA Police will also be notified of your result.
  • If you are unsuccessful twice, your training provider will be notified. If you are unsuccessful a third time, you will need to complete refresher training at your own cost and wait one month before booking another test. Please note that we do not identify which individual questions were answered incorrectly.

The cost is $70.00 plus GST per test.

Why is there a fee for the test?

The test fee helps cover the cost of administering and delivering the Security Competency Test. This includes booking administration, identity and eligibility checks, test supervision, venue and facility costs, monitoring and security arrangements, marking, results processing, and other operational costs needed to run the test fairly, safely and consistently.
