Pre Test Information

Pre-Test Information for Candidates

Important information to help you prepare for the Security Competency Test and understand the steps before you book.

Before you sit the test

Before you can sit the Security Competency Test, you must complete the Certificate II in Security Operations (CPP20218) with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that meets current WA Police Licensing Enforcement Division requirements.

Completing the qualification is an important first step, but it does not automatically mean you are ready to sit the test or apply for a licence.

You should make sure your training is valid, your certificate has been issued, and you understand the next steps before booking.

We strongly recommend that you complete the Suitability Quiz on this website before enrolling in training or booking the test. The quiz is designed to help you think about whether security work is right for you, whether you are suited to the demands of the role, and whether you are likely to be ready for a supervised written test based on your training.

Choosing the right training provider (RTO)

Choosing the right training provider is important. Not all training delivery methods or providers will meet licensing requirements, and not all training will necessarily prepare you well for the written Security Competency Test or the real-world demands of working as a Security Officer or Crowd Controller.

Before you enrol, you should make sure that your chosen training provider and course:

  • is delivered by a Registered Training Organisation that meets current WA Police licensing requirements
  • covers the full Certificate II in Security Operations qualification required for licensing purposes
  • includes assessment of the written communication and practical knowledge needed for security work
  • will result in a valid certificate being issued once you have successfully completed all course requirements
  • supports you to understand the pathway from training completion to competency testing and then to licence application

For the most up-to-date information about approved training providers and licensing-related training requirements, visit WA Police Licensing Services before you enrol.

Questions to ask before you enrol

Before you enrol, it is a good idea to ask the training provider clear questions so you understand exactly what you are signing up for and whether the course will support your pathway to testing and licensing. You may wish to ask:

  • Does this training meet current WA Police licensing requirements for Security Officers and/or Crowd Controllers?
  • How is the course delivered, and what attendance and assessment requirements apply?
  • How will written communication, incident reporting and scenario-based understanding be assessed during training?
  • How and when will my certificate be issued once I successfully complete the course?
  • Will my certificate include the details I will need for test booking, including my USI?
  • What support is available if I need to strengthen my written communication or understanding before I sit the test?

What you need to do before sitting the test

Before you book and sit the Security Competency Test, you should make sure you have completed all of the following:

  • completed the Certificate II in Security Operations with an appropriate RTO
  • received your certificate of completion
  • checked that your personal details and certificate details are correct
  • reviewed your course materials so you are ready for a supervised written test
  • made sure you can read the questions carefully and write short answers clearly in English
  • understood what to bring on the day, including your certificate, receipt and photo identification
  • read the booking conditions, test information and Terms and Conditions before you book

Taking these steps before booking will help reduce delays, avoid cancelled appointments and give you a better understanding of what to expect in the testing process.
